The treatment of children – Self reflection:
The self reflection document has been designed for use with the guidance on the treatment of children.

0 – 3 years:

How experienced are you at working with or treating children in this age group?

How confident do you feel about treating persistent vomiting in a young baby? Please refer to the guidance for other common conditions in this age group.

How confident are you in recognising normal growth and development in this age group in order to provide appropriate treatment?

3 – 8 years:

How experienced are you at working with or treating children in this age group?

How confident are you in recognising normal growth and development in this age group in order to provide appropriate treatment?

How confident do you feel about communicating with a child with behavioural issues in this age group?

Are you aware of and can you identify the special risks or hazards that your treatment room might present to younger children, e.g. placement of sharps boxes?

8 – 13 years:

How experienced are you at working with or treating children in this age group?

How confident are you in recognising normal growth and development in this age group in order to provide appropriate treatment?

How confident do you feel about treating a child with asthma / chronic cough? Please refer to the guidance for other common conditions in this age group.

14 years and over:

How experienced are you at working with or treating children in this age group?

How confident are you in recognising normal growth and development in this age group in order to provide appropriate treatment?

General Considerations

How confident do you feel in recognising the signs and symptoms in children that require hospital referral?

How confident do you feel in communicating effectively with parents/carers of the child regarding your treatment approach?

How confident do you feel in recognising the signs of abuse in children?

How confident are you that you have effective policies and procedures in place for safeguarding children?

How well do you understand your responsibility in obtaining consent when treating children?
